Mental Health Essentials

Mental Health Essentials is a 1 day hands-on training program designed to help employees identify and respond effectively to an individual who may be suffering from one or more common mental health problems. 

This course has been developed utilising the latest evidence based research, and incorporates a ‘recovery oriented’ approach, which respects cultural and psychological diversity.

Learning outcomes

After this course participants will be able to:
  • Have a good understanding of a range of common mental health issues including anxiety, depression, psychosis, trauma and substance use problems
  • Identify warning signs that someone may be becoming unwell or deteriorating
  • Respond appropriately to assist the person to access further help if required
  • Provide a supportive and safe environment for well-being
  • Respond in a mental health emergency situation, without making it worse
  • Communicate effectively with a distressed person to provide emotional and practical support to help them in their recovery.

  • Understanding Mental Health - what it is, different perspectives
  • Prevalence of Mental Health issues in Australia
  • Anxiety Disorders – including different types of anxiety
  • Depression – what it is and how to tell is someone might be depressed
  • The facts and myths about suicide
  • Warning Signs of suicide and how to respond
  • Psychosis – what it is and what it is not
  • Substance Use Problems – when does it become a problem

For In-Council delivery only

  • Educating your staff together in one group is an excellent way to embed knowledge and create a culture of learning. Attendees can then keep each other accountable to the learning content and can give additional structure and meaning to delivered feedback. Each course can be hosted in your council, and can accommodate up to 25 people, room size permitting. The content can also be tailored to align to any previous training directive, should this be required.

  • About the facilitator

    Emi is a registered Psychologist, Associate Member of the Australian Psychological Society and NLP Results coach and trainer. As a psychologist, Emi has worked extensively in the mental health sector, gaining experience at the front line, and at a managerial level. A specialist in ‘Recovery Oriented Practice’, Emi has delivered mental health training to a range of audiences including community support workers and registered nurses.
