Next up in our series of LG Excellence award winning webinars is City of Canterbury Bankstown - Bankstown Complete Streets. 

The City of Canterbury Bankstown is thrilled Bankstown Complete Streets has been recognised for its innovation and commitment its community. Bankstown Complete Streets is a 20-year place plan aimed at transforming the Bankstown CBD in south-west Sydney to a go-to-destination. This unique plan brought together the expertise of urban designers, landscape architects and transport planners to produce a cohesive and comprehensive plan. We are excited to see our vision for Bankstown become a reality.

PRESENTER: Valerie Giammarco | City of Canterbury Bankstown

Valerie is the Manager City Design at Canterbury Bankstown Council. She leads the urban design, landscape architecture and major projects teams. She is a Registered Architect and Planner with post graduate qualifications in urban design, project management and mediation. Over the last few years she has specialised in place making and collaborative innovation focusing on meaningful outcomes in cities and public spaces. 

Valerie is part of the NSW Planning Institute of Australia Women in Leadership Group. She sits on the Australian Institute of Architects Built Environment committee and Gender Equity taskforce. She was chosen to be part of the Smart Cities Australia New Zealand Mobility Taskforce and is an active mentor both as part of Council's emerging leaders program and PIA's mentoring program.

Her work has won many awards including most recently the 2020 Local Government Professionals NSW Award in the Special Project Initiative category and the 2019 Smart Cities Australia Partnership Award for Bankstown Complete Streets Plan and future streets installation. The Place Leadership National Award at 2018 Place Leaders Asia Pacific Awards and a commendation for best small planning project at 2016 National PIA awards for Waverley Urban Interventions. She was chosen for the Local Government Manager's Association Aspiring Leaders Program in 2013 and received the Local Government Managers Association Raymond West Scholarship 2013. 

Valerie follows Jan Gehl's approach of "people first, then spaces, then buildings. The other way around never works".
