Scrap Food Waste - An Onsite Vermicomposting Trial At a MUD

Scrap Food Waste - An Onsite Vermicomposting Trial At a MUD

The Hills Shire Council is undergoing substantial change, with plans being made for a 80 per cent increase in population by 2036. This means that an increasing number of residents living in more high-density developments across the LGA will soon be in need of various established and innovative mechanisms that manage food waste generation.

In March 2021, Council launched a three-month onsite vermicomposting trial in an apartment building funded by the NSW EPA, providing targeted residents with a means to divert their food and organic waste from landfill. Food waste diversion is analysed as residents weigh the food waste placed into the worm farm and record the value using a QR code.

Council is working with a Contractor to implement the engagement and education program for the trial project. With a target of 80% participation already achieved; other indicators that are being measured include waste diverted from landfill, cost savings to Council, levels of contamination and stakeholder satisfaction rates.

This presentation will present the mid-term progress findings of the trial; including communication strategies employed, learnings from initial stages and early results.
