Rural Management Challenge

For more than 20 years, Councils from around Australia and New Zealand have supported staff participation in the Australasian Management Challenge, with many making it a part of their HR Development Programs.

Councils send teams of five or six members and a mentor, to take part in the state-based regional round of the Management Challenge. The winners from each state then go on to participate in the Australasian Finals.

Prior to the regional Challenge, teams undertake a pre-challenge task to help them understand each other’s strengths and develop strategies for the Challenge. The task is related to real, topical issues that organisations deal with, and is the first of the professional development components.

The regional Challenge Days are held in March in each capital city and in some regional centres. On the day, each team must fulfil a number of tasks that typify management in the local government environment and develop individual and team competencies. Detailed and targeted reports from professional facilitators provide the basis for workplace debriefing and the application of learning outcomes.

The best performing team from each state and New Zealand then go on to contest the Australasian Final.
The Rural Management Challenge produces outcomes that have relevant, tangible and enduring benefits for your people, teams and council. It’s good fun, great value and highly effective training.

Teams are challenged as they workshop emerging issues and trends facing the sector and take a management role as they discuss and debate operational challenges.
At the end of the challenge, teams have a greater understanding of their council, their community and local government as a sector. 

Each Rural Management Challenge team consists of four council staff and a mentor. . The role of the mentor is to coach the team pre and post the challenge. Mentors also play a vital role on the challenge days and are invited to be a part of the facilitation team and contribute to the tasks. Mentors receive detailed information pre-challenge to assist their team throughout the two days as well as a detailed report from the facilitators post-challenge that will form the basis for debriefing and the application of the learning outcomes to the workplace.
