As part of our commitment to developing the next generation of leaders in local government, we are thrilled to announce a new award for 2020 - The Next Gen Leadership Award.

This award recognises leadership excellence and will be awarded to a Next Gen member who has made an outstanding contribution to the positive growth of their council and community.

The recipient of The Next Gen Leadership Award will receive:
  • Complimentary registration for the Next Gen Conference to be held in November 2020
  • Complimentary registration to the Retiring Member and Mentoring Graduation Dinner following the Next Gen Conference
  • A profile story in the association's membership magazine LG Professionals

The recipient will also be nominated for the national Emerging Leader of The Year Award which is judged as part of the national federation awards and will be announced towards the end of the year.

How to Apply

Please submit via email to the following - 
  • Cover page including name of applicant, name of council and applicant's contact details 
  • Current CV, no more that 2 (two) pages
  • Letter of endorsement from applicant's CEO/GM
  • 500 word (maximum) essay that details your aspirations and achievements in the sector. This could include, but is not limited to
    • Examples of how you have demonstrated outstanding leadership skills in the workplace
    • How you have contributed to your team and/or council
    • How you have contributed to your community through your work with council
    • Examples of your personal drive
    • Examples of your professional and personal integrity
    • How do you engage with professional development & self improvement through opportunities provided by LG Professionals, NSW as well as your employer and any other activities you have undertaken

Selection Process

LG Professionals, NSW will convene an independent judging panel to asses all applications. The panel will select a short list of up to six applicants who will then be interviewed by the panel. The Next Gen Leadership Award recipient will be selected from the shortlist and announced mid September.


Applications are invited from Next Gen Members who have held continuous membership for a minimum of 12 months and commenced in a leadership role (given responsibility for the first time to manage staff, including both internal and external work teams and/or manage a department, function or significant project) within the past 24 months.
