Next up for our Award winner presentations is Northern Beaches | Swap for Good Business Program
14 October 2020
Northern Beaches Council identified that businesses wanted to reduce single-use plastic; however, needed support to get started. In 2019, the Swap for Good business program was created. Waste Educators worked with over 2,000 food and beverage businesses providing resources, and guidance enabling them to swap out single-use plastic. The program was developed to include face-to-face and online engagement, events and a resource kit with action plans, posters and supplier lists. Behaviour Change, Sustainable Procurement and Marketing Guides were also developed to ensure long-term change.
10:30AM - 11:15AM
Presenter: Alicia Lloyd & Sasha Lucius | Waste Education Project Officers | Northern Beaches Council
Since completing her PhD on the risk of ocean acidification for reef-building corals 8 years ago, Alicia has been dedicated to working on sustainability issues. Before working at Northern Beaches Council, Alicia ran business engagement initiatives through community organisations such as Plastic Free Manly, Plastic Free Bondi and Sustainable Organisations of Manly, to align the local economy with protection of the ocean and our living world. Alicia was moved to develop these projects after working at Manly Sea Life Sanctuary and seeing the devastation that plastic had on turtles and local marine life. Alicia is a waste education officer at Northern Beaches Council where she runs the Swap for Good business program with Sasha Lucius.
Sasha originally trained in Education at Macquarie University. Having worked in various roles across Australia, Canada and the UK, Sasha settled back on the Northern Beaches in time for the Sydney Olympics. A universal theme throughout her roles has been working with the community and identifying their needs.
Sasha started at Northern Beaches Council 9 years ago, working in various areas of community education. Sasha has developed and implemented programs for Waste Education, Building Compliance, Rangers & Enforcement, Environmental Health, Companion Animals and Youth Services.
In January 2019, Sasha was engaged as a Waste Education Project Officer. Sasha, along with her colleague Alicia Lloyd, developed Swap for Good, a program to guide and support businesses in their move away from single-use plastic
In June 2019, the Swap for Good business program launched and one month later the Business Expo was held. There were 300 attendees, which sent a clear message – businesses were hungry for information and support.
